Present: Mr Spottiswoode, Treasurer and Vice President of the Royal Society in the Chair, Dr Allman, Dr Carpenter, Mr Gwyn Jeffreys, Dr Hooker, Admiral Richards, Dr Sharpey, Mr Siemens, Professor Stokes, Professor Wyville Thomson

Minutes of 30 May 1872 read and confirmed.

Letter from the India Office read (see printed inset, from Council Minutes 20 June 1872) and Secretary read a letter to correct the misapprehension concerning the £200. [See Letter Book page 364].

Admiral Richards, Mr Gwyn Jeffreys and Dr Carpenter undertook to order scientific equipment; Professor Wyville Thomson to communicate with Admiral Richards for better water bottles, and confimed his appointment was now settled.

Report made to the Council as to personnel and arrangements for the Challenger Expedition to be communicated to the Admiralty.

Professor Thomson and M?r Siemens to confer re apparatus for testing chemical action of light in the depths of the sea.
