Description | Committee appointed following receipt of letter from the Lords Commisioners of the Admiralty to the President and Council, at a meeting of Council 17 December 1874 ' ..it is their Lordships intention to despatch an Expedition in the Spring of 1875, to endeavour to reach the North Pole, and to explore the coasts of Greenland and adjacent lands...My Lords would invite the President and Council to offer any suggestions which may appear to them to be desirable in regard to carrying out the Scientific conduct of the Voyage: observing that, owing to the necessarily limited accommodation of the ships, it will not be convenient to attach any Civilian Scientific Staff, and that it is proposed to intrust the various investigations to the Naval Officers composing the Expedition.
