TitleLetter from the Science and Art Department, South Kensington, to W White
Date9 January 1877
Description' I regtret that I have not bee able to answer your enquiries with reference to the grant for reserch soource as it was necessacry to make some Enquiries.
The course of procedure will I take it be this - The Royal Society will recommend certain grants. Some fo these may be lump sums, some monthly or quarterly payments. As soon as the recommendation of the Royal Society has been approved by the Lords fo teh Court of Council in Education the Royal Society will I presume communicate with the gentlemen named and ask them if they are willing to accept the sums for the objects and on the terms stated. The Royal Society should then I think send a memorandum to this Dept. asking it to pay the lump sums on certain dates. And with respect to periodic payments the Royal Society should inform the Dept. when the first payment should be made and should renew the claim whenever further payments become due.
The payments will then be Made by Order on the Paymaster General which are negotiable through any banker.'
