Description | ' Sir Henry Lyons and Sir Frank Smith asked Mr J Yarrow to lunch with them to discuss his vacation arrangements. The original intention of going to Allen's for a short vacation course in engineering was dropped, and in this one of us (Sir Frank Smith) knew we had the support of Mr Allen. Mr Allen was perfectly willing to do his utmost for Mr Yarrow, but I have reason to believe that it would be far more beneficial for Mr Yarrow to have a real holiday. We, therefore, agreed that Mr Yarrow should spend his vacation on the Continent and visit a few engineering firms such as Krupps.
Mr Yarrow struck us as very keen, almost too keen in fact, on his studies in Cambridge, and undoubtedly he has an engineering bend. His illness of two years ago has, however, had its effects, and it is because of this that we are agreed that it would be better for him to go on the Continent iinstead of taking an engineering course in some engineering works in this country. The arrangements proposed by Mr Yarrow for a Continental holiday were obviously dictated by financial consideration. We agreed, therefore, to make him an offer of £50 from the Yarrow Educational Fund, so that he should derive the maximum benefit from his holiday. ' |
