Description | Present at the Council: The President, Lord Brouncker; Lord Stafford; Mr Charles Howard; Sir Paul Neile; Sir John Lowther; Mr Samuel Pepys; Mr Daniel Colwall; Dr Croon; Mr Abraham Hill; Mr Henry Oldenburg
The President gave the Council notice that a Committee of the Professors of Gresham College and another of the Mercer's Company had invited the Royal Society to return to Gresham College and keep their assemblies there as they did formerly before the Fire. He had thanked them for their offer and for their respect to the Royal Society, and stated he would discuss it with the Council at their next meeting. The Council thought it good to return their hearty thanks to the Committees yet without saying anything to them of acceptance while the matter was under consideration.
Lord Stafford, Sir Paul Neile, Sir John Lowther, Mr Pepys, Mr Colwall, Dr Croon, Mr Oldenburg or any three of them were appoointed to give the Society's thanks to the Committees.
During the discussion Sir Theodore Vaux entered, sent by the Lord Marshall to ask the Council why they did not meet in Arundel House as formerly and hoped they would still continue their meetings there, as he would take it very unkindly if they would remove to any other place.
The President declared that he had summoned the Council to this place for his particular convenience which did not permit him to go far off. At the Council's desire he thanked the Lord Marshall for his singular affection and respect to the Society.
The President then intimated it was time to call upon the Dean of Canterbury, Dr Tillotson, as Executor of the late Bishop of Chester; Dr Wilkins, for his legacy of £400 sterling bequeathed to the Royal Society. The Council requested Mr Colwall and Mr Hill to speak with the Dean about the matter.
Chelsey College was discussed, including a suggestion of pulling down the house and selling the materials. Council thought Mr Hoskins or some other lawyer should be consulted whether this could be done nothwithstanding the clause in the Charter of non Alienation.
The Secretary produced the report of the physicians Dr Croon, Dr Needham and Dr King concerning the anatomical controversies between Dr Swammerdan and Dr Graef referred to the judgement of the Society and asked if the said report should be dispatched to the persons concerned or deferred until the Society meet again. It was decided to send it away by the first post, as it had already been very long deferred.
Number 97 of the Philosophical Transactions was licenced by the Council. |
