' Lord Parker, Lord Perceval, Lord Paisley, Mr Watkins and Dr Stanley were sworn of the Council.
Mr Meers, Mr Byron, Mr Robert Ord, the Reverend Mr Vernon, The Reverend Mr Ellys, Mr Lethicuellier, Mr Nicholas Cruquius, Monsieur De Lisle Junior, Mr John Kendal and Mr Dobbins were Severally put to the Ballot and approved for Candidates.
The Treasurer Moved that the Council would consider of some Effectual and Speedy Method to Secure the Debt due from Mr Thomas the late House-keeper, Whereupon it was Resolved That Mr Frewen the Solicitor have directions given him to wait upon Mr Vaughan in the Temple and to discourse with him concerning Mr Thomas's Effects which are in his hands; and after that To proceed in such Methods as is proper to attach the same Effects.
The President put the Council in Mind, that the Societys House in Crane Court which is now Vacant, is very much out of Repair, and that it would be for their Intrest to put it in a good Condition and make it Tenantable, and he laid before them an Estimate which was made by proper Workmen of The Repairs which are wanting amounting to about £37.
Whereupon the Council desired Mr Folkes to take upon him the trouble of Treating with the Workmen about the repairs and also with such as shall offer to be Tenants. And having his Consent, They Ordered That Mr Folkes have full power to Act in this affair in the Name of the Society, and to order and direct whatever he shall Judge proper to be done for the repair of the House; And that he have full power to treat with any Person who is willing to take the Said House and upon such terms as he can gain for the most advantage to the Society to lett it.
The President moved the Council to think upon proper measures to be taken for procuring without much delay a Licence of Mortmain to Enable the Society to make purchases if Needfull.
My Lord Parker being present was desired to mention this matter to my Lord Chancellour and to use his Interest with him to procure a Licence of Mortmain to enable the Society to purchase to the Value of £1000 per Annum. ' |
