Letter read by the President from the Spanish Ambassador, ' dated London 22 August 1766 signifying the consent of the King of Spain, that Father Boscovich and another Jesuit as his assistant might go to California to observe the transit of Venus 1769; provided that they go in a Spanish vessel. And it is the intention that some of His Catholic Majesty's subjects should accompany Mr Boscovich to profit by the lights, and knowledge, which such an occasion will procure. '
