' Resolved, That the Lord Bishop of Phillaloe, and the Reverend Owen Manning be allowed to take such Volumes fo the Philosophical Transactions as they have not yet received under the usual limitations of Council.
The List of defaulters was read over and orders were given for second Letters to be sent.
The President gave notice that he had named the Reverend Mr Auscough to preach Fairchilds Sermon, and Dr Bailly to read the Krohnian Lecture for this year.
Ordered, That a bill of Mr James Medland Carpenter and Plasterer for fitting up a Warehouse in Bermondsey Street Southwark for part of General Roy's Apparatus amounting to £10 - 10 - 0d be paid by the Treasurer.
Resolved, That the Duke of Richmond be allowed to borrow the Glass rods used by General Roy in the measurement of the Base on Honslow [Hounslow] Heath.
The Astronomer Royal, having stated to the Council the proceedings relating to Dr Bradbys Observations moved the following Resolution.
Resolved, That altho' the Royal Society did in the year 1776, when the Observations of the late Dr Bradley made by him at the Royal Observtory of Greenwich during the time he was in his Majesty's Service as Astronomical Observator, were presented to the University of Oxford by the Earl of Guilford Chancellor of the said University, desist at that time to sollicit the Crown to the farther prosecution of the legal proceedings it had instituted in order to recover them from the persons that detained them, the Royal Society did not admit any Right the said Chancellor of the University of Oxford had to dispose of the same, or give up their own claim, as Visitors of the Royal Observatory by virtue of His Majesty's Appointment to the said Observations, but acquiesced under a promise made by the Earl of Guilford that they should be published by the said university with as little delay as might be ; a Promise which they understood to have been founded on an Engagement of the same nature made with him by the University of Oxford at the time they received them.
This Resolution was approved of and the President was requested to transmit the same to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford.
The Astronomer Royal gave in the Greenwich Observations for the year 1790 and orders were given for their bing immediately sent to the press. ' |
