DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. John Bostock; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederick Daniell; Peter Mark Roget; Benjamin Travers; Charles Wheatstone; the Treasurer, Francis Baily, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Report of the Reception of the President and Council by H.M. Queen Victoria at St. James's Palace on 20 June 1838, full text entered into the minutes: a mace procession into the Presence Chamber, with the address of the Duke of Sussex, and the Queen's signature entered into the Charter Book as Royal Patron; members of Council presented individually to kiss the Queen's hand. Letter from Mr. Henderson, the Astronomer Royal in Scotland, stating that sixty copies of the astronomical onservations made in Edinburgh had been placed at the disposal of the Royal Society, these to be distributed in the same manner as the Greenwich Observations. Copies of Philosophical Transactions from 1835 to be given to the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh. Royal Medals for 1841 to be given for the best papers in mathematics and chemistry. All books borrowed from the Library to be returned by 1 August and Mr. Roberton to compile a list of non-returning borrowers. Mr. Roberton to have leave of absence in August, with no books to be lent out. Leave of absence granted to Mr. Shuckard. Request from Mr. Bigsby for a further extension of time for admission to the Fellowship, granted. The Assistant Secretary prohibited from delivering any books from the Library except to Fellows applying personally, or persons authorized to sign a receipt for them. Letter from Colonel Chesney to Captain Beaufort enclosing another by Mr. Ainsworth and relating to a paper by Ainsworth referred to the Committee of Papers. Seal of the Royal Society affixed to the diploma of election of Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Nominations of members of subject committees deferred until the next meeting.
