Commencing with a list of Council members present: Samuel Hunter Christie; Sir Henry De La Beche; Edward Forbes; Thomas Galloway; Sir William Robert Grove; William Hopkins; Leonard Horner; George Porter; Dr John Ayrton Paris; Reverend Baden Powell; George Rennie; Dr Peter Roget; Captain William Henry Smyth; Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Sykes; Charles Wheatstone; the President [Spencer Compton] Marquis of Northampton in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: List of the recommended Council members and Officers for 1848. Salaries for staff of the Royal Society. Bills from the Societies suppliers to be paid including for bookbinding, printing and engraving, shipping and household and household expenses such as heating, lighting and repairs. A resolution of the Committee of Chemistry recommending the award of the Royal Medal for 1847 to George Fownes for his papers 'On the Artificial Formation of a Vegeto-Alkali" and 'On Benzoline' in the Philosophical Transactions of 1845. No Royal Medal for mathematics to be awarded in 1847 as there are no suitable candidates, instead Royal Medal awarded to physicist William Robert Grove for his papers 'On the Gas Voltaic Battery' and 'On Certain Phenomena of Voltaic Ignition'. The Copley Medal to be awarded to Sir John Frederick William Herschel for his star catalogues made from observations at the Cape of Good Hope. Application from Mr Sylvester for a gentleman to read in the Royal Society library was denied. Letter from Macedonio Melloni requesting copies of the Proceedings and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society for the library of the Royal Academy of Science Naples in exchange for its publication 'Acts', which request was approved (letter not transcribed).
