DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Robert Brown; Samuel Hunter Christie; Sir James Clark; Samuel Cooper; Sir Henry De La Beche; Edward Forbes; John Gassiot; Thomas Graham; Charles Lyell; the Duke of Northumberland [Algernon Percy]; George Rennie; Dr Peter Roget; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine; the President [Spencer Compton] Marquis of Northampton in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the Duke of Northumberland made the required declaration as a new member of the Council. The candidates selected by ballot to be recommended for election as Fellows [candidates listed]. Election to take place on 9 June as there will be no meeting on 1 June, the President's anniversary address and dinner to take place on the same day. Request by Gassiot that the Earl of Rosse [William Parsons] be asked to sanction his nomination for the office of President approved by Council. Nomination of a new Secretary for the Society to be discussed at the next meeting. A letter from Henri Milne-Edwards at the Jardin de Plantes, Paris, thanking the Foreign Secretary for his election as a Foreign Member [letter rreproduced in full in the minutes]. A letter from Lord Palmerston of the Foreign Office [reproduced in full in the minutes] communicating a letter from D S Merceron to the British Consul at Baltimore [not reporduced in minutes], in which he sent a paper titled 'The Square Root of Surds, Solution of the forty-seventh Problem of Euclid, and Square of Circle with the true method of finding the circumference'. A letter from Thomas Firminger on behlaf of A M Bate, regarding Hydrometers of the late Robert Brettell Bate's design which they made for the Royal Society Excise Committee and would now like to borrow for demonstration to the Honorable Board of Excise with a view to their use by the Revenue [letter reproduced in full in the minutes]. A letter from Mr Trevelyan of the Treasury [reproduced in sull in the minutes] communicating a copy of a letter from A BArcley Secretary of the Hudson's Bay Company [letter reproduced in full in minutes]. In response to which the Treasury is recommending Government grant the Company £1,000 for supplies provided to Captain John Henry Lefroy whilst carrying out the the Magnetic Survey of North America, but they will not sanction further public funds that were not sanctioned prior to the expedition. Further extracts of correspondece with Sir George Simpson concerning details of the assistance Lefroy received from the Hidson's Bay Company are transcribed in the minutes.
