| Description | Printed minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.
Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Robert Brown; Samuel Cooper; Sir Henry De La Beche; Edward Forbes; John Gassiot; Thomas Graham; Sir Robert Harry Inglis; Charles Lyell; George Rennie; Dr Peter Roget; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine; Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Sykes; the President [Spencer Compton] Marquis of Northampton in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: the seal of the Society affixed to diplomas for new Foreign Members. A letter from Samuel Hunter Chrisite, absent due to the illness of his child with scarlet fever, notifying Council that John Edward Gray located the missing manuscript original of his paper on Chitons [letter reproduced in full in minutes, see also CMP/2/24]. A letter from Dr Rothman the Registrar of the University of London granting the Council's request to use their rooms for meetings [letter reproduced in full in minutes]. A letter from James Melville of the East India Company regarding the continuation of tidal observations at Western India and Scinde [Sindh, Pakistan] to be carries out under orders of the Bombay Government [letter reproduced in full in minutes along with enclosure to the Court of the EIC from Willoughby Cotton, L R Reid and J P Willoughby at Bombay Castle, giving details of the arrangement and progress of the observations]. A letter from Mr Orlebar former Superintendent of the Magnetic and Meteorological Observatories of Bombay [Mumbai] asking for his observations and notebooks now at the Royal Society, to be sent to him at Oxford, so he can prepare an introduction to the astronomical observations for 1846, which request was granted on the condition they be returned to the Society [letter reproduced in full in minutes]. A letter in Italian from E Fabri Scarpellini, editor of the 'Corrispondenza Scientifica', to the Foreign Secretary of the Society requesting the 'Proceedings of the Royal Society' [letter in italian reproduced in full in minutes]. The need to appoint a Secretary to the Society who is knowledgeable in the same subjects as the retiring Secretary viz: anatomy, physiology and natural history. Competing recommendations that Mr Grove or Thomas Bell be elected Secretary to the Society, the former of which was carried. A letter from Robert Lee requesting engravings by Mr Basire for his papers on the uterus [letter reproduced in full in minutes]. A letter from John Fletcher Miller of Whitehaven asking for funds from the Royal Society to replace instruments in order to continue his meteorological observations in the Lake District including at Sca Fell [Scafell], in response to which the Council grants £30 from the Donation Fund for 'measuring rainfall in the Lake District of Cumberland and Westmoreland' [Miller's letter reproduced in full in minutes]. Members of the Finance Committee appointed to consider whether soirees for the Fellows can be held in the rooms of the University of London which the Society has permission to use. All books to be returned to the library by the end of July and the library closed for the month of August. Permission for Edwin Lee to make a copy of his paper on the Brain, which is deposited in the archive.
