DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; John Joseph Bennett; Sir Benjamin Brodie; Samuel Hunter Christie; Dr John Forbes; Leonard Horner; Gideon Mantell; Dr William Allen Miller; Reverend Henry Moseley; Sir Roderick Impey Murchison; Richard Owen; Sir Jonathan Frederick Pollock; George Rennie; Dr Peter Roget; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine; Charles Wheatstone; the President [William Parsons] Earl of Rosse in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: resolutions in response to a letter from Dr Robinson, President of the British Association (letter printed in Council minutes of 18 October 1849, see CMP/2/41), concerning establishing a large reflector in a southern hemisphere observatory, correction of the levels of the Ordinance Survey of Ireland to the mean sea level, and the publication of the British Arc of the Meridian. A letter from John Henry Pelly of the Hudson's Bay Company, dated 14 March 1850, requesting the Royal Society's support for their expedition to the arctic in search of John Franklin (letter reproduced in full in minutes), to which the Council responded that they cannot offer any financial support. A letter from William Henry Smyth, dated 23 March 1850, offering the Society a lithograph of a drawing by Charles Turnor depicting the statue of Isaac Newton made by Roubilliac for Trinity College Cambridge (letter reproduced in full in minutes). Mr Noirot, librarian of the Geographical Society of Paris, granted a copy of the Philosophical Transactions for 1838. A letter from William Ford Stevenson (no details provided and letter not reproduced in minutes). Thanks received from George Newport and Edward Frankland for grants made to them from the Donation Fund. A letter from the British Association dated 22 Mar 1850 (letter reproduced in full in minutes) including extracts of minutes of their Council regarding sale of copies of maps of the monthly isothermal lines of the globe by Professor Heinrich William Dove of Berlin. List given of bills to be paid for expenses associated with producing the Philosophical Transactions.

Minutes of the first meeting of the Committee of Recommendations for the application of the Government Grant held at Somerset House on 21 March 1850 are reproduced in full including list of members of that committee. These minutes record that the Government made £1000 available to award and the committee received 11 applications for funds. A further session to receive more applications will be held in May and decisions made at a meeting in June. Applications so far received listed as:
James David Forbes for thermo-multiplier apparatus
Reverend Humphrey Lloyd for (1) publication of Armagh astronomical observations and (2) publication of Edward Cooper's catalogue of ecliptic stars
Charles Brooke to construct instruments to compensate for temperature when recording magnetic force
Arthur Hill Hassell for illustration of a work on urinary salts
James Glaisher for meteorological investigations
William Radcliffe Birt for research into atmospheric waves
H T Bagster for investigations into the effect of magnetism on the development of plants and animals
Thomas Wharton Jones for investigations into inflammation
Richard Owen for producing drawings of fossils of interest for comparative anatomy
Charles Wheatstone for the Committee of the Kew Observatory to purchase meteorological instruments.
