| Description | Printed minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.
Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; William Bowman; Sir Benjamin Brodie; Reverend Professor James Challis Samuel Hunter Christie; Dr John Forbes; Marshall Hall; Gideon Mantell; Dr William Allen Miller; Richard Phillips; Sir Jonathan Frederick Pollock; William Henry Smyth; Edward Solly; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine, Vice President and Treasurer, in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: a letter from the Prime Minister, John Russell, dated 6 Jan 1851, committing £1,000 [government grant] from the fund for Special Service to be awarded by the Royal Society [for the purposes scientific investigation] as in the previous year [letter reproduced in full in minutes]. A 'Committee of Recommendations for the application of the Government Grant' appointed and Professor [Richard] Owen, Miller and [Charles] Wheatstone added to it members to replace ex-officio members. Correspondence concerning the continuance of the Magnetical Observatory at Toronto, Canada beyond the present agreed tenure of 31 March 1850, including letters from Sabine, Humphrey Lloyd President of the Royal Irish Academy, John Herschel, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in which are given details of the Toronto Observatory, its running (including costs), and the meteorological and magnetical work it does and its value [five letters reproduced in full in minutes]. Council resolve to recommend the continuation of the Toronto Observatory to the government. £100 granted to Francis Ronalds in response to his letter of 18 Dec 1850 [requesting funds for the trial of his self-registering magnetographs at the Kew Observatory, see letter at CMP/2/63]. Permission granted for the family of Professor Heinrich Christian Schumacher, astronomer, to make an engraving of his portrait hanging in the meeting room [see portrait at P/0015]. A letter from Wilhelm Weber wth his thanks for being elected Foreign Member [letter not reproduced in minutes]. A letter from Lieutenant Colonel Sykes [of the East India Company] communicating curves of a daily register of temperature at Meerath in Upper Dooab [Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Upper Doab, India] recorded by Mr Gubbins.
