| Description | Printed minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.
Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; John Joseph Bennett; Sir Benjamin Brodie; Samuel Hunter Christie; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; Dr John Forbes; Marshall Hall; Gideon Mantell; William Henry Smyth; Edward Solly; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine; Lord John Wrottesley; the President [William Parsons] Earl of Rosse in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: Decisions of The Committee of Recommendations for the Application of the Government Grant on whom to award funds for 1851.
List given of the amount from the Government Grant to be awarded to each of the following, with a names of three Fellows assigned to each to oversee the proper use of the funds:
Dr Thurnam, for procuring drawings of skulls of early British races
George Gabriel Stokes, for experiments to determine the index of friction in different gases
Dr Hofmann, to continue his investigations on organic bases
George Biddell Airy, for reduction of astronomical observation made by the late Reverend Thomas Cotton from 1791-1832
John Fletcher Miller, for continuation of his meteorological observations on the rainfall and temperature in winter in the Lake District
Dr William Benjamin Carpenter, for drawings of Formanifera collected on the Australian coast during the surveying voyage of HMS Fly
Leonard Horner, for analysis of specimens of water and soil from the River Nile
William Hopkins, for investigations on the effect of pressure on the temperature of fusion of certain substances
Dr William Allen Miller, John Peter Gassiot and Edward Sabine, for construction and verification of standard meteorological instruments
Professor Richard Owen, to pay for drawings of undescribed fossils from South America and Australia.
Reports on research progress to be made to the Council by the assigned sub-committees for each grant, by 30 April each year.
A Committee to be appointed to prepare guidance on the award of the Government Grant.
A petition from Susan Holtzer, widow of the late Porter of the Society, in response to which a gratuity of £25 decided to be granted to her in recognition of the long service of her husband and father before him.
A letter from Captain Elliot regarding his magnetic survey of the Indian archipelago [letter not abstracted or reproduced in minutes], in response to which the Society Secretary to write to [James Cosmo] Melvill [of the East India Company].
