Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended to the Society for election for service in the ensuing year. Adjudication of Medals: the Copley Medal awarded to Henri Victor Regnault, including for his work on the specific heat of gases and vapours; a Royal Medal to Thomas Maclear for his measurement of the arc of the meridian at the Cape of Good Hope; a Royal Medal to Augustus Matthiessen for electrical and physical researches into metals and alloys. George Gabriel Stokes was appointed a member of the governing body of Eton School: William Spottiswoode was appointed to Westminster School. Appointment of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Professor Wyville Thomson granted an extension of time for his admission as a Fellow. A vacancy had arisen in the list of Foreign Members owing to the death of Professor Purkinje. The Foreign Secretary presented a list of institutions desiring an exchange of journals with the Royal Society, and a lits of ten successful exchanges entered into the minutes. Proceedings granted to the Chemical Society of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The corporate seal of the Royal Society was added to the transfer deed of Madras Railway stock in which the Davy Medal Fund is invested. Dr. Carpenter stated the the expense of the Lightning expedition had been £25 15s. 6d. and the Donation Fund surplus remained in his hands: the £200 voted for the Porcupine expedition had proved sufficient for the purpose; Carpenter proposed that the additional Lightning funds should be expended on the drawings of new and remarkable types of specimens, which was approved.
