TitleLetters on Freezing PT and buffers, arranged by Douglas Robert Wilkie
CreatorWilkie; Douglas Robert (1922 - 1998); physiologist
Date1971-1972
DescriptionFile of letters concerning freezing PT and buffers, received and sent by Wilkie:

An exchange between Wilkie and Dr. Kenneth George Denbigh FRS, where Denbigh comments that not many books deal with the topic of multicomponent mixtures because the algebra concerning consistency with the Gibbs-Duhem equation becomes complicated. Explains it should be possible, in principle, to determine the excess free energy from freezing point measurements on a quaternary reaction provided it is reacting very slowly, and the measurements are extended over a really big range of compositions, dated 19 and 23 July 1971.

Letter from Wilkie to Professor John Shipley Rowlinson FRS, informing that he has spent a great number of years working on problems connected with the mechanical work which is produced by contracting muscles. The mechanical work originates from the hydrolysis of phosphoryl creatine and his interest lies in the free energy changes associated with this hydrolysis. Enquires whether it is possible to look into the cratic element of the free energy change, by measurements of the vapour pressure or of depression of freezing point. Informs he has been in contact with Dr. Kenneth Denbigh FRS on the possibility of determining the excess free energy from measurements of the activity of water in a series of such mixtures and is stuck over how to apply the Gibbs-Duhem equation to other binary mixtures, dated 24 August 1971.

Letter from Wilkie to Professor John Shipley Rowlinson FRS, acknowledging the points he mentioned in a previous letter as very important because the reaction as it occurs in vivo at pH7 does involve the complication of interaction with buffers but has found a potential way to eliminate it. Clarifies that he did not intend to work with a system that is actually reacting but rather with a series of stable mixtures that mimic the progression of the reaction, detailing his methods. Dated 6 December 1971.

Letters exchanged between Wilkie and Dr. David A. Armitage, Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College, whereby he sent Wilkie a copy of his handwritten notes, hoping that the analysis of the Gibbs-Duhem equation is helpful, dating between 23-20 April 1972. Appended is a photocopy of handwritten notes titled "The Hydrolysis of Phosphoryl Creatine".
