CitationMr William Wales, Master of the Royal Mathematical School in Christs Hospital.
A Gentleman deeply skilled in Astronomy, and other branches of mathematical learning, and Author of a restitution of the lost books of Apollonius Pergaeus, concerning determinate Sections. Advantageously known to this Society by his observations, made by their order, [in] the years 1768 and 1769 in Hudsons Bay, on the transit of Venus etc. And since that time, by his appointment to accompany Captn Cook in his late voyage round the World.
Being desirous to be admitted a fellow of this Society, we whose names are hereunto subscribed, do, from our personal knowledge of him, and our acquaintance with his works, testify, that we believe him deserving of that honour, and that he will become a worthy and useful Member
