Citation | Has served 31 years in the Great Trigl Survey of India, during 20 of which, as Head of the Computing, Printing , Drawing, and Photo-Zincographic Office. Principal Compiler of Vol I Operations G T Survey of India 1870, on Standards of Measures and Base Lines. - Assisted at the Measurement of Souakoda, Church, and Vizagapatam Base lines. Superintended the measurement of Bangalore Base line. - Reduced by method of least Squares, the triangulation of the NW Quadrilateral of India, defined by the Seronj, Dehr, Church, & Kurachi Base lines, covering an area of about 260,000 square miles and involving the simultaneous determination of 1500 unknown quantities. Determined experimentally the Expansions of the Steel & Iron 10 feet Standards of the Indian Survey and reduced the results; besides taking a leading share in numerous comparisons of Standards. Author of papers read before the Royal Society, on Meteorology, Terrestrial & Solar Physics, and on his Observations of the Transit of Venus 1874. Distinguished as a Mathematician Astronomer & Physicist. Eminent as a Geodesist. |
