Was appointed to the Chief Constructorship of the Navy in 1863 on account of special scientific acquaintance and has filled that office with success having received in consequence the Companionship of the Bath from the Crown.
Is the Author of a Paper read before, and printed in the Transactions of, the Royal Society, "On the relation of Form and Dimensions to Weight and Material in the Construction of Iron-clad-Ships."
Is also the Author of an elaborate work entitled "Ship-building in Iron and Steel", published in 1868; and of numerous Scientific Papers published in the "Transactions of the Institution of Naval Architects" and of the British Association of Sciences. Distinguished for his knowledge of Naval Architecture.
