Title | Hodgson, Brian Houghton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Eminent for his studies in the Buddhistic Literature of Nipal & Tibet. Author of numerous papers on the Physical Geography, Ethnology, Languages, Customs and Religions of the native tribes of Tibet, the Himalaya and other parts of India; and on the Zoology of Northern India, &c. Mr Hodgson's magnificent collection of Sanskrit, Buddhist, Tibetan & Nipalese Manuscripts were presented to the Governments of India and France. His Zoological collections were presented to the British Museum, to which a special catalogue has been devoted. In regard to his Literary labours, Eugene Burnouf described him as "the founder of the true study of Buddhism." |
