Title | Festing, Edward Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his knowledge of Electrical Science and Molecular Physics. Is author of several papers published in the Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society and elsewhere. In conjunction with Captain Abney has developed facts of much importance in connection with the constitution and grouping of organic bodies as indicated by their spectroscopic behaviour. He has established experimentally the localities in the spectrum of the absorption of aqueous matter in the atmosphere, more especially in the infra-red end of the spectrum. He has also shown, that with an arithmetical increase in total radiant energy, the radiation for every ray of the spectrum may be represented by a curve which is either hyperbolic or parabolic, and has thus developed an important law in radiation. He was the first to demonstrate, in connection with an important Department of the Government Service, that electric lighting can be successfully and economically adopted in public buildings |
