| Citation | Chief Assistant, Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Senior Wrangler, 1892. Late Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Has materially improved astronomical methods, especially in reference to lunar theory. He has thus been enabled to carry out very expeditiously a complete analysis of every known term in the moon's longitude exceeding 0''.1 from comparisonwith the Greenwich obsevations, 1750-1901, thus in effect forming a lunar theory from observation. In the course of his discussion he has determined anew the constants from observation which are required in the dynamical theory, and has discovered a new empirical term of 2''.3 with a period of 66 years. Among his papers may be mentioned, 'Inclinational terms in the Moon's Rectangular Co-ordinates' (Amer Journ of Math, 1895); 'Refraction Tables (Appendix to Greenwich Observations, 1898); 'Value of the Moon's Longitude when the Sun's Mass is Zero' (Monthly Notices, Roy Astron Soc, vol lx); 'On the Formulae for Star Corrections' (ibid); 'Reduction of Extra Meridian Observations of Planets' (ibid, vol lxii); and a series of papers in the Monthly Notices, Roy Astron Soc, vols lxiv and lxv; 'On the Comparison of Greenwich Observations, 1750-1901, with corrected tables of the Moon, including Determinations of the Lunar Constants and Discussion of Long Period Terms.' |
