| Citation | Regius Professor of Natural History in the University of Glasgow. Neill Gold Medallist of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1902; President of the Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh. Distinguished as a Zoologist, and especially for his Researches on the Anatomy and Development of Fishes. He was the first to obtain the embryos and larvae of Lepidosiren. In 1889-1891 he took part in an exploring expedition on Rio Pilcomayo in the Gran Chaco. In 1896-1897 he organised a second expedition to the Gran Chaco for the purpose of studying the development of Lepidosiren. Editor of the Memorial Volume containing the collected papers of the late Mr J S Budgett. Author of numerous memoirs on Zoological subjects, of which the following may be mentioned: - 'The Avifauna of the Lower Pilcomayo' (Ibis, 1892); 'The Anatomy of 'Nautilus Pompilius'' (Proc Zool Soc, 1895); 'Hypothesis as to Origin to Paired Limbs in Vertebrates' (Proc Camb Phil Soc, 1900); 'The Zoological position of Palaeospondylus' (ibid, 1900); 'The External Features in the Development of Lepidosiren' (Phil Trans, 1900); 'On the Birds Observed during a Second Zoological Expedition to the Gran Chaco' (Ibis, 1901); 'The Development of 'Lepidosiren paradoxa', Parts II and III' (Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1901-1902); 'Phylogenetic Relationship between the Amphineura and Cephalopoda' (Zool Anzeiger, 1901); 'On the Early Development of Motor Nerve Trunks and Myotomes in 'Lepidosiren paradoxa'' (Trans Roy Soc Edin, 1904); 'The Embryology of certain of the Lower Fishes' (Proc Roy Phys Soc Edin, 1906); 'The Development of Polypterus' (Budgett Memorial Volume, 1907). |
