Citation | Lecturer on Chemistry, Goldsmith's Institute. Distinguished on account of the breadth and exactness of his knowledge of organic chemistry, and of his skill and assiduity as a practical worker. Author of numerous communications to the Chemical Society, during the period 1893-1907, relating to derivatives of camphor and allied compounds, or involving the minute study and philosophical discussion of processes of chemical change. A list of forty communications published in the Transactions of the Chemical Society is appended to this certificate; of these, may be mentioned 'Sulphonation of Benzophenone and of Diphenylmethane' (1898); 'A Possible Basis of Generalization of Intramolecular Changes in Organic Compounds' (1898); 'Action of Hydrolytic Agents on a-Dibromocamphor' (1899); 'Optically Active Esters of beta-Ketonic and beta-Aldehydic Acids' (1902-1904); 'Reactions Involving the Addition of Hydrogen Cyanide to Carbon Compounds.
