Citation | Botanist (unconnected with any teaching institution; has acted as Advisory Botanist to the Government of New Zealand). Author of many contributions to a knowledge of the Flora of New Zealand and its adjacent and remote groups of Islands, including the Sub-Antarctic, mainly with the object of determining the phytogeographical relationship of its component forms as influenced by climate,altitude, present and probable previous geological conditions and human agency. In pursuing this object he has, mainly on his own resources, explored not only much of New Zealand proper but the dependent Islands and Archipelagoes from the Chatham Group to the Sub-Antartic. Among published papers the following are of special interest: - 'On the Burning and Reproduction of Sub-Alpine Scrub and its Association Plants' (1899); 'A Sketch of the Plant Geography of the Waimakariri River Basin' (1900); 'An Enquiry into the Seedling Forms of the New Zealand Phanerogams and their Development' (1899-1901); 'The Ecological Botany of the Sub-Antarctic Islands of New Zealand' (1909); 'The Bryophyta and Lichenes collected in Stewart Island' (1910); also Reports (represented to Government) 'On Botanical Surveys of Kapiti Island' (1907); 'The Waipoua Kauri Forest' (1908); 'The Tongariro National Park' (1908); 'Stewart Island' (1909); and on 'The Sand Dunes of New Zealand' (1909). |
