Citation | Engineer-in-Chief of the Royal Navy; responsible for all the technical matters relating to the design and construction of machinery and boilers of HM ships. Vice-President of the Institution of Naval Architects. Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Ex-Instructor in Marine Engineering, Royal Navy College. Author of a 'Manual of Marine Engineering,' adopted as an official text-book by the Admiralty, and generally recognized as a standard book of reference. Has contributed to the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers important papers on the same subjects. Initiated and conducted various experimental researches for the Admiralty, out of which have come discoveries which have contributed greatly to the remarkable developments in warship machinery made in recent years, and have enabled higher speeds as well as economics in coal consumption to be attained. Amongst these enquiries the following may be mentioned: - Experiments on the phenomena attending transmission of heat through iron and steel plates, as affected by thickness of plates, deposits on plate surfaces such as occur in steam boilers, and other varying conditions; accurate measurements of steam consumption and relative efficiences of engines of various types; limits of steam production possible with 'forced' draught without damage to boilers; efficient combustion of oil-fuel; the fall of pressure of steam when passing through pipes of different proportions in comparison with the power transmitted, or 'differently' lagged; the causes of corrosion of metals and alloys commonly used in marine engines; the calibration of large shafts, and their behaviour under various methods of applying or removing leads; the distortion of metal bars produced by differences of temperature; the rubbing friction of metals. He is recognized as one of the leading authorities in the generation and use of steam power for marine propulsion, and as having contributed largely to the introduction into British warships of water-tube boilers, steam turbines, oil-fuel, mechanical draught and other improvements. Served as the Admiralty representative on the important Committee which enquired into the best type of propelling apparatus for two Cunard Steamships 'Lusitania' and 'Mauretania', and recommended the adoption of steam turbines. Has throughtout his professional career displayed knowledge of various branches of science, and has proceeded on strictly scientific methods in his experimental enquiries. |
