Citation | Colonel RE. Director-General of the Ordnance Survey. Distinguished for his knowledge of Goedesy and Survey, and for his zeal in applying them to the service of the state. Has represented Great Britain on the Delimitation and Demarcation of several important Frontiers. While Chief of the Geographical Section, General Staff, he included the Measurement of an Arc of the 30th Meridian in the work of the Uganda-Congo Boundary Commission. Has been chiefly responsible for the re-establishment of its credit. Has taken the leading part in the organisation of the Carte Internationale du Monde au Millionieme, and is Director of its Bureau Central. His direction of the Ordnance Survey is distinguished for the re-establishment of the scientific work of that Department, in the new determination of Mean Sea Level, the new Precise Levelling of Great Britain, the collaboration with the Royal Society in the new Magnetic Survey, and other important work. Author of the 'Official Textbook of Trigonometrical Surveying' and papers on 'Map Projections.' Halley Lecturer, Oxford, 1914. Member of Council, Royal Geographical Society. |
