Citation | Medical practitioner. Distinguished as a zoologist who contributed much to our knowledge of the fossi reptilia of South Africa and of the origin of the mammalia. Author of about a hundred works on the embryology, comparative anatomy and palaeontology of the vertebrata. Has written many papers on the structure of the nasal and palatal regions of the skull ansd on the mammalian shoulder girdle; 'The Comparative Anatomy of the Mammalian Organ of Jacobson' (Trans Roy Soc Edin 1897); 'On the Homology of the Palatine Process of the Mammalian Premaxillary' (Proc Linn Soc NSW, 1895); 'On the Development of the Marsupial Shoulder Girdle' (Trans Roy Soc Edin, 1899 &c). Has studied the development of monotremes and marsupials. 'On the Arterial Arches and Great Veins in the Foetal Marsupial' (Journ Anat Physiol, 1898); 'The Development of the Common Phalanger' (Proc Linn Soc NSW, 1898 &c). Has described a large number of new fossil fish, amphibia, mammals, and especially reptiles from South Africa, and worked out their structure and affinities with remarkable success. 'On the Origin of the Mammal-like Reptiles' (Proc Zool Soc, 1907); 'On Some New Fossil Reptiles from the Karoo' (Trans S Africa Phil Soc, 1907); 'The Relationship of the South Africian Fossil Reptiles' (ibid, 1910); and numerous papers in Annals of the Transvaal Museum, Annals of South Africian Museum, Geological Magazine, Records of the Albany Museum, &c. |
