| Citation | Royal Astronomer of Ireland, and Andrews Professor in the University of Dublin. Author of 68 papers on Astronomical or Mathematical subjects, chiefly in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, among which may be mentioned: - two 'On the Images Formed by a Parabolic Mirror'; several 'On the Accuracy of Astronomical Measures, with Discussions of Points in the Theory of Errors'; two 'On the Effect of Radiation-pressure on Cometary Motion'; several 'On Spectroscopic Binaries and their Orbits: a discussion of Aberration from the Relativity Standpoint' ; and some valuable papers on 'Variable Stars.' In April, 1905, he suggested 'the possibility that we have to deal not with one stream (of stars), but with two or more distinct streams' (Monthly Notices, vol lxv). This suggestion was made independently of Kapteyn, and actually precedes anything published by Kapteyn, though in 1904 Kapteyn had suggested the 'two star streams' verbally at St Louis. Professor Plummer also suggested a fertile hypothesis for discussion of stellar radial velocities, deducing a large number of parallaxes which successfully anticipated later work of the same kind. |
