Citation | Distinguished for contributions to our knowledge of the passage of electrical discharge through gases, and particularly for his proof of the complexity of the atoms of many of the ordinary elements of the positive ray method. In a series of five papers published in Proc Roy Soc between 1907 and 1913 an account is given of experiments to determine the length of the cathode dark space in different gases under varied conditions. 'A Simple Form of Microbalance' (Proc Roy Soc, 1914) was designed to test the separation of the isotopes of neon by diffusion. In 'A Positive Ray Spectrograph' (Phil Mag, 1919) a new method is described for determining the mass spectra of the chemical elements. In the 'Constitution of Atmospheric Neon' and 'The Mass Spectra of the Chemical Elements' (Phil Mag, 1920, and Nature, 1919 and 1920), a number of the elements are shown to consists of two or more isotopes whose masses have been measured. Author of numerous other papers on electric discharge in gases. |
