| Citation | Greatly distinguished for his work on X-rays and crystals, for which, jointly with Sir William Bragg, he was awarded both the Nobel Prize and the Barnard Medal in 1915. Formerly Lecturer in Natural Science, and Allen Scholar, University of Cambridge. His work, done partly alone and partly with Sir William Bragg, is so widely known and constitutes so fundamental a contribution to physics as hardly to need specific mention. But special reference my be made to the following papers, not written in collaboration: - 'The Diffraction of Short Electromagnetic Waves by a Crystal' (Proc Camb Phil Soc, 1912), the first paper of a fundamental kind following the discovery of Lane and others. 'The Structure of some Crystals as indicated by the Diffraction of X-rays' (Proc Roy Soc, 1913); 'The X-ray Spectrometer' (ibid, 1913); 'Crystalline Structure of Copper' (Phil Mag, 1914); 'The Arrangement of Atoms in Crystals' (ibid, 1920). His work was interrupted during the war, in which he was Technical Advisor in Sound Ranging, GHQ, France. This Department was notably successful and largely owing to valuable scientific work done by Prof Bragg, which cannot receive specific description here. |
