Citation | Distinguished for his researches in the science of range-finding and for the invention of a self-contained range-finder. His production of an instrument which can divide an angle to one-third of a second and yet carry the optical elements which does this in a casing capable of standing rough uses and changes of temperature without detriment to its accuracy is an achievement in mechanical science unparalleled in our time. His researches have extended to anti-aircraft height-finders, fire control instruments and to many scientific instruments. He designed and equipped with novel apparatus the Engineering Laboratories at Leeds and Glasgow. Author of many papers of high scientific value. |
