Title | Gordon, Mervyn Henry: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Was the first to employ fermentation reactions in differentiating the streptococci. Used the presence of certain streptococci as an index of possible infection of air from the respiratory tract, thus introducing a novel aid to the study of ventilation problems. Demonstrated (independently of Nicolle and Conseil) that the saliva in mumps contains a filter-passing virus capable of causing interstitial parotitis and lymphocytic meningitis in monkeys. Introduced biochemical tests for differentiating the meningococcus. Defined the serological races of the meningococcus concerned in cerebro-spinal fever, preparing the way for material advances in the prevention and treatment of that disease. |
