Distinguished for his researches on the coal measures and the geological phenomena of the last glacial epoch. When Professor at Leeds he founded a successful School of Geology. Among his more important papers are 'The Concealed Portion of the Coalfields of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire'; 'Cleat in Coal Seams'; 'Split Coal Seams'; 'Physiography of the Coal Swamps'; 'Carboniferous, Permian and Quaternary of Great Britain'; 'Glacier Lakes in the Cleveland Hills'; 'Glaciation of East Lothian' (with E B Bailey); 'Glacial Geology of the Isle of Man.' |
