These relate to (a) the constitution of binary and ternary alloy systems; (b) the theory of the hardening of metals and alloys by heat and mechanical treatment; (c) the function of chromium and tungsten in rapid cutting tools; (d) the theoretical effect of increasing the oxygen of the blast supplied to blast furnaces; (e) the production of single crystals of iron by strain and heat-treatment; (f) the annealing of steel sheets. During the war he served as a member of the Light Alloys Advisory Committee to the Air Board and took part in several investigations undertaken for that body. |
