Citation | Distinguished for researches in biochemistry; investigated the hexosemonophosphoric acid of fermentation; made researches (in part with pupils) on ossification and developed an original theory of the mechanism of this process. During these he discovered a phosphatase in ossifying cartilage, examined action of this and phosphatases of other tissues on phosphoric esters (including problem of kidney phosphate secretion), examined the phosphoric esters of blood. Investigated (partly with Martin) the nitrogen requirements of man; (with Harden) antiscorbutic properties of fruit juices; (with Kipping ) organic compounds of silicon; (partly with Hantzsch) relationship between colour and constitution of violurates. |
