Title | Harington, Sir Charles Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse. Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for the application of organic chemistry to biology. Gained the Harrison Memorial Prize for the best research by a British Chemist under thirty. Increased yield of thyroxine from the gland twenty-five fold and could thus determine its constitution; synthesised thyroxine (now manufactured in several countries). Made peptides of thyroxine, resolved thyroxine and obtained the more potent enantiomorph by enzymic digestion of the gland; similarly isolated its probable precursor di-iodo-tyrosine. Found a novel standardized method for crystallising insulin. Synthesised thiolhistidine (probably present in zein) to facilitate search for this amino acid. Discovered attraction of Teredo larvae by constituent of wood. |
