Citation | Gained a world-wide reputation for inventing the Thrust Bearing, which is called after his name. The invention of this bearing may be regarded as one of the most important inventions in mechanical engineering of this century, and has opened up large possibilities in the construction of big liners and mechanical apparatus where much transmission of thrust is neccessary. Michell has also made a number of other inventions dealing with lubrication, the most notable of which are a new type of Journal Bearing, a Crankless Engine and a Viscosimeter. These are the result of theoretical study deepening and widening the theory of lubrication as given by Osborne Reynolds. Besides his pioneer work in this field, Michell has made a number of other inventions used in practice, and written papers on other engineering questions. Of these inventions might be mentioned his Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps and Turbines and the Inventation of a Self-Checking Telegraphic Cipher System. |
