CitationDistinguished for his researches on ionisation in flames. His Heidelberg Dissertation of 1911 is still referred to as a standard work. His pioneer work on plastic flow led him to the identification (in 1914) of single metal crystals. Was associated with Lord Rutherford in the first determination of gamma-ray wave-lengths. Has done much in recent times to clear up outstanding problems on the movements in vibrating columns of gas. Is director of a flourishing research school at University College (London). Author of a standard treatise on the Structure of the Atom and numerous other works.
