Citation | He has (1) an outstanding and world-wide reputation as designer of steam turbines; published important memoirs on Turbo blowers and compressors (1916); High Speed Gears in turbine development (1917 and 1922); Economic value of increased steam pressure (1927); Tendencies in Steam Turbine development (1928 and 1929), in which opinions were expressed which have since won general acceptance and have resulted in turbine efficiencies of 35 per cent being reached . Also an important memoir on Surfacing Condensing Plant (1934). (2) Invented many machines and appliances in connection with the steam turbine for land, marine and railway purposes, culminating recently in the 'Turbomotive.' (3) Instigated and encouraged international cooperative research on properties of steam and is member of many research committees. |
