Citation | Hume-Rothery has made several very important contributions to the modern theory of alloys. He has shown that the structure of a large number of intermediate metallic constituents (intermetallic compounds) depends on a certain ratio of free electrons to atoms. This is known as Hume-Rothery's Law, and before it was introduced no explanation of the structure was available. He has also shown that the solid solubility of one metal in another depends on the relative atomic sizes and the numbers of valency electrons. By means of his formulae the relations in ternary systems can be calculated when the binary systems are known. In establishing and verifying the above laws he has carried out extensive and accurate researches to obtain the necessary data. He has also written a valuable book entitled 'The Metallic State' in which the physical knowledge available up to 1931 is critically considered. |
