Title | Russell, Sir Frederick Stratten: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | An exceptionally active worker on zooplankton and other branches of marine biology, whose work is distinguished by thoroughness and originality. His long series of papers on vertical distribution and movements of macroplankton has thrown much light on a subject of which little was known, and has added considerably to our knowledge of the life-history of fishes. He has studied the seasonal cycle in a number of planktonic animals, obtaining specially significant results in 'Sagitta', showing that the species of this genus and other animals are distinctive of water-masses of particular origin and may thus be used as indicators. He has done valuable work on Hydroids and Hydromedusae. |
