His researches have been concerned with the passage of B particles and of cathode rays through matter; the electrical nature and polarity of thunderstorms; the relations between cosmic rays and thunderstorms; the intensity of cosmic variation; the nature of lightning and the spark discharge; the nature of atmospherics. He is directing a team of 12 research workers (including 7 University lecturers) in Capetown, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria, engaged in investigations on the nature of atmospherics and lightning.
