Title | Smith, Kenneth Manley: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for research on Plant Viruses. First to describe X-bodies in mosaic disease of potato. Determined the relation between toxicity of Insect saliva and Insects' ability to transmit plant viruses. Has identified several new viruses and was the first to recognise that certain diseases might be due to a combination of viruses, and devised methods for their separation and synthesis. Using Elford's ultrafiltration methods he has separated what appears to be two strains of a single virus. Has discovered a virus possessing such unusual properties as to suggest the possibility of its being non-living. Has published a book on plant virus diseases which has placed this study on a sound scientific basis. |
