Title | Stedman, Edgar: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches in organic and biological chemistry: Determination of the constitution of the alkaloid physostigmine. Synthesis of numerous simpler urethanes having a similar action; one of these ('prostigmine') has been introduced into practical medicine. Exploration of the relationship between chemical constitution and physiological action in this new and extensive group. Discovery of a new enzyme choline-esterase, which is inhibited in varying degree by all the active urethanes. Determination of its absolute rate of action (Proc Roy Soc 1936, B 121, p142). Investigated haemocyanins from a variety of invertebrates and determined the dissociation curves of their compounds with oxygen. |
