Title | Jones, Sir Bennett Melvill: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches in aeronautics, which have profoundly influenced the development of this science and of its practical applications. Much important work is not represented by papers under his own name, because his ideas have been the stimulus under which teams of research workers have worked towards a successful objective. Instances are: (1) satisfactory control of areoplanes at speeds below the 'stall'; (2) the 'cleaning up' of areodynamic design, leading to great increase of speed; (3) the 'wool tuft' method of investigating airflow in flight. Recently he has developed successfully a method, using very simple apparatus, for determining 'prolific drag' in flight experiments. |
