| Citation | From his study of the herbage plants making up pasture land Stapledon was able to demonstrate that the species there found, both of grasses and clovers, constitute mixed populations of forms of varying habit. He evolved a technique of propagating clover selections until their grazing value could be assessed. From these clovers seed was raised and further selections made, the best strains of which have been multiplied and put into commerce, both here and in New Zealand and Australia. For this work Stapledon has gathered round him a group of devoted workers and built up at Aberystwyth the authoritative station for pasture problems within the Empire. By his active propaganda ('The Land Now and To-morrow,' 1935 and other publications) Stapledon has exerted a remakable stimulus towards the better management of grassland. |
