Title | Hardy, Sir Alister Clavering: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches on plankton and their application to fishery problems. Has made valuable contributions to the study of the ecology of the herring; was for some years chief zoologist on the staff of the Discovery Committee and published an important memoir on Antarctic plankton containing new and illuminating theories. The inventor of most ingenious apparatus for the study of plankton. His 'Plankton Indicator' and 'Continuous Plankton Recorder' are now in regular use. The former has been adopted by herring drifters as a means of locating shoals of fish, while with the latter, worked from commercial ships, he is able to follow with accuracy the changing distribution of plankton throughout the North Sea. Has employed with marked success similar methods, using kites, for the study of insect movements to altitudes of over 2000 ft. |
