Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for experimental work in the field of magnetism. By his pioneer contributions of fundamental importance, he may be claimed to be the leading British experimenter in this subject. Following upon early accurate measurements of the gyromagnetic effect in ferromagnetics (1923-5) his extension of the method to the far more difficult field of paramagnetism (1930 onwards) was an outstanding experimental achievement. Other important investigations concern the specific heat of ferro-magnetics, the susceptibility of the alkali metals, the production and properties of single crystals of nickel and the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic metals and alloys both below and above the Curie temperature. His magnetic balance is a model of simplicity, accuracy and convenience, and is proving to have an extensive range of application. |
